The climate crisis is a hunger crisis

2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record. Droughts, floods, and storms are becoming worse and more frequent. 3.6 billion people – nearly half of the world’s population – live in areas vulnerable to climate change.

But the climate crisis is also a hunger crisis. Changing temperatures, more frequent and worsening climate disasters, and rapidly deteriorating soil quality all impact people’s ability to grow or buy enough healthy food.

Without quick, effective action, the situation will only get worse, putting up to an additional 183 million people at risk of hunger by 2050.

That’s why we’re asking the Prime Minister and his government to step up to the plate to tackle the joint climate and hunger crisis.

We call on Keir Starmer to:

  • Commit to providing future UK international climate finance (ICF) that is genuinely new and additional to existing commitments by putting in place polluter pays measures to generate new public finance in a fair way
  • Return UK ODA commitments to 0.7% and reverse last year’s ICF accounting changes to rebuild the UK’s reputation as a trusted partner that fulfils its international promises
  • Ensure climate finance reaches those who need it most, including women and girls
  • Personally attend COP29 to listen to the experts and agree on actionable solutions.
