What is the real impact of the UK’s Aid Cuts?

Decisions are being taken that affect whether people live or die — in your name.

It's one year since the UK cut 40% of its aid. The consequences remain unclear.

After the Trump administration cut over 80% of US foreign aid, Keir Starmer followed, and between 2024 and 2026, UK aid cuts will be the steepest of any G7 country, even surpassing Trump’s reductions

Trump's aid cuts cost 88 lives lost every hour. By 2030, UK and global aid cuts could cause 22 million avoidable deaths, including 5 million children under 5.

And this isn’t some future warning. Famine has now been confirmed in parts of Sudan and Gaza.

Despite this, the UK has offered no meaningful assessment, no transparency, and no roadmap for resuming the fight against hunger and poverty.

Ask your MP:

  • What impact assessment has been made since the decision?
  • What has been lost in FCDO capacity and expertise?
  • When will the UK again support people facing hunger?
  • How will the UK meet its legal and moral commitments on poverty and hunger?
  • When will the UK return to 0.7%?

It only takes a minute. Your MP needs to hear from you.

Behind every line of a budget cut is a child who eats less, a family forced to flee, or a life put at risk – let's find out why.

Subject: Has the Government assessed the impact of aid cuts?

Dear [MP Name],

I am writing as your constituent to tell you my fears about the aid cuts, and to ask you to do something about it.

As you’ll undoubtedly be aware, and as equally horrified as I was, the UK and US aid cuts happened a year ago. Trump’s USAID cuts have resulted in over 800,000 deaths worldwide. That’s 88 lives per hour.

What did Keir Starmer do? He copied Trump. He slashed aid by 40% - this is something I can’t comprehend – and organisations like Action Against Hunger are trying to pick up the pieces and support those people who are being left behind by global superpowers, but it’s an impossible task.

What I would like you to do is find out what has happened since the UK Government made the decision to cut aid, why they did it, and when they can reverse this decision. As my representative in Parliament, I think you have a responsibility to hold the Government to account and ensure that the UK ends world hunger, not add to it.

Could you please ask the Government in any way you can – either through a Parliamentary Question, in the debate chamber, or in a letter to the relevant Minister – the following:

Has the Government looked at what impact these aid cuts are having, and will it publish the findings?

  • Why did the Government cut UK aid, and one year on, what does it think the human impact has been?
  • What has been lost in terms of FCDO capacity, expertise, and programming as a result?
  • When will the UK restore support for people facing hunger and severe malnutrition?
  • How will the Government meet its legal and moral commitments on poverty reduction and hunger?
  • When will the UK return to spending 0.7% of national income on overseas aid?

This anniversary is painful, and the human cost of the Government’s decision is unfathomable, but I think it's also an opportunity to change course. Please use your voice in Parliament to ask for clarity, transparency and essentially, the restoration of UK aid.

Thank you – I would be extremely grateful for any update you can provide.
